Gov. Cuomo’s Pledge - 800MW of Offshore Wind Power by 2019 - Will Create Thousands of Jobs and Billions in Economic Activity + Reduce Consumer Electricity Costs

NYSERDA Should Move Quickly

ALBANY, NY – The New York Offshore Wind Alliance applauded the order issued today by the Public Service Commission to have NYSERDA move forward and accomplish Governor Cuomo’s commitment to procure 800MW of offshore wind by 2019.

The Alliance, a statewide coalition of environmental, business and labor groups, had been urging quick action by the PSC so that New York can move quickly in a race with New Jersey, Massachusetts and other Atlantic Coast states to become the hub of a burgeoning clean energy economy and reap the benefits that come from being a national offshore wind leader.

Offshore wind is an essential component to meeting the Governor’s goal of having 50 percent of New York’s electricity generated by renewable energy sources. Gov. Cuomo’s plan would create enough offshore wind energy to power 1.25 million homes by 2030.

PSC’s action represents another great step towards a new, robust offshore wind industry here in New York…Good-paying union jobs related to infrastructure, port development, tourism, manufacturing, science and technology, and research are all within reach. The members of New York’s Building Trades Unions have the experience, training and expertise to make sure all the projects associated with the offshore wind industry are built safely, on-time, and on-budget, and we eagerly await the opportunity.
— Jim Cahill, President, NYS Building & Construction Trades Council

We are very pleased that the Public Service Commission will be advancing 800MW of offshore wind production. We also commend Governor Cuomo and NYSERDA for implementing labor standards to ensure offshore wind is developed responsibly and will produce quality, good-paying clean energy jobs for New Yorkers.
